How does an NFT work? Quickly explained

Let’s now clarify the term NFT. NFT = Non-fungible Token = “non-replaceable tokens”, if you translate it 1:1. Formulated somewhat more nicely:

NFTs are digital, unique, protected objects

NFTs are therefore digitally unique, something one-of-a-kind, traceable thanks to an object’s visible sales history. Everything is documented in a blockchain, mostly Ethereum. Each NFT is a token, more precisely a non-fungible token. This type of token contains additional content, for example smart contracts, in which various information can be located. For example, the entire transaction history (from publication to all buyers / sellers), but also the royalty (a strong advantage for artists, which we will get to in a moment).

Advantages for artists: Smart Contract / Royality

NFT use smart contracts. A programmed contract that has been deposited. This can contain various things as just described, for example, when was bought, sold, who bought, sold (history of transactions), but also the link to the original file.

In addition – and this is where it gets interesting for artists – the creator can add a percentage to the smart contract that he or she will receive for every (yes every) future transaction. In the technical term “Royality”. Mostly up to 10%.

Profit on every sale (Royality)

This is an enormous advantage over the regular physical art market, in that the creator only profits once, on the first sale. With NFTs, the creator receives the share with every transaction.

For artists, this means: Regular cash flow

The value creation therefore only benefits collectors. Artists are involved in the entire value chain with NFTs. So you could also give away your art (or offer it cheaper) to profit later.

Now the big question, how do you get started? How can you create and sell NFTs?

Create account: Marketplace and Wallet

To sell NFTs, you need two things. You need a wallet (digital purse) and an account with an NFT marketplace.

Step 1 – Wallet: Your digital wallet

Wallet means “digital wallet”. We store your digital money (cryptocurrency), but also your purchased NFTs. You link this wallet to the marketplace and you can upload and sell your artwork.

Instead of many sentences, simply explained in bullet points (with technical terms):

• Cryptocurrency = digital currency
• Ethereum (cryptocurrency/blockchain) = very frequently used currency on marketplaces
• Wallet = purse (also NFT storage place)

Step 2 – Marketplace: platform for buying and selling

An NFT marketplace is a platform where artists offer their new works and collectors buy and also resell digital art.

Create NFT: Upload, Minting, Sale

You have your wallet, you have chosen a marketplace, now you can publish your art (technical term: minting).

There is more within the NFTs than “just” art. There are also collectibles (which will play a role in the later metaverse), but also gaming, trading cards (soccer, baseball, etc.), as well as music, exclusive access and even domains.

NFT Collections: “Art Packages

If you want to sell NFT for the first time, you have to learn the world of NFT & digital art first.

Unlike physical art, there are also entire collections of hundreds and even thousands of individual objects. Here is a small insight into a few examples of successful NFT collections: The“CryptoPunks” and the “BoredApe Yacht Club“.

Such collections are not a must, you can of course publish individual artworks.

Step 1 – Upload in the Marketplace: Portfolio (Minting)

With this step you add your artwork to your portfolio. Now we come to minting, the publication of your NFT. This is the moment when your smart contract is entered on the blockchain for the first time. Only in the second step, the listing, your NFT is offered for sale.

First click on “Create” in the menu.

You can add a few extras to your NFT.

• Properties – categorization for collections (by color, accessory, etc.)
• Unlockable Content (after purchase)
• Levels
• Stats
• …

Now just upload and done, your NFT is in your portfolio.

Step 2 – Listing and sale

You have your NFT, now you just click “Sell”.

Briefly explained NFT, Marketplace and Wallet

To trade digital art, you need a wallet, the right marketplace for digital art, but also knowledge about the collections and artists behind the digital artworks. As with physical art, it’s all about the artist behind the projects. The more you know, the more you can survey the market of tens of millions of works. First of all, for those who don’t yet know what an NFT is, here’s a quick explanation.

What is an NFT? Meaning

The abbreviation NFT stands for “Non-fungible Token” and translates as “non-replaceable token”.

Quickly explained: Until now, digital works could be copied at will. NFTs document the history of a digital work. This makes the history from creation through all transactions visible to everyone. Similar to physical works of art, the authenticity can be confirmed. The success of NFT art is demonstrated by examples such as the “5,000 Days” project, which was auctioned at Christies for $69 million.

For documentation, an NFT uses a blockchain, often Ethereum. The blockchain then documents all transactions, as described from publication, across all transactions.

Trading (buying and selling) takes place on marketplaces.

Marketplaces for NFTs: List

There are now relatively many NFT marketplaces and platforms. Binance, Crypto.com, OpenSea, GameStop, Rarible are just a few of the most important names. Fewer are not coming, as digital art is gaining in importance. Larger investors, even hedge funds are also investing in digital art.

The next step to buy and sell NFTs, you need a wallet and cryptocurrency (mostly Ethereum). Wallet means “digital wallet.” We store your digital money (cryptocurrency), but also your purchased NFTs.

Let’s summarize the “preparation” again. NFTs are digital art, you need a wallet and a marketplace. Steps in preparation:

Before the sale, another term of the NFT world: Minting.

Minting: Publication of NFTs in the marketplace

The term “Minting” refers to the publishing of new NFTs. “Minted by X” therefore means that an NFT was published by person X. Thus, every documentation in the blockchain starts with the minting of an object.

Buy NFT: Example (Opensea) in 4 steps

In the example, we buy from Opensea (marketplace) with a Coinbase wallet. First you need to buy Ehtereum, most marketplaces trade Ehtereum as a digital currency.

In 4 steps you connect your wallet to the respective marketplace where you want to buy crypto art. This is done with a few clicks, directly in the marketplace.

1. Set up wallet and buy cryptocurrency (mostly Ethereum)
2. Link wallet and marketplace

Step 1: Set up wallet

In the example you can see the Coinbase wallet. You can then buy various cryptocurrencies in your digital wallet. Most marketplaces or NFTs work on the basis of Ethereum. As a rule, you will have to buy Ethereum to be able to buy NFTs.

Step 2: Link marketplace and wallet.

In the second step, you connect your wallet to the respective marketplace. In the example you see Opensea. The link is very easy with QR code and QR code scanner on your smartphone. As soon as marketplace and wallet are linked, you can buy NFTs.

In the menu you can link marketplace and wallet. This will automatically create a user account.

Step 3: Browse collections

Continue searching for collections and individual NFTs. You will come across millions of different NFTs. It is therefore important that you familiarize yourself well with the matter of buying and trading art in advance.

Tip: Successful artists in the real world, have the greatest chance to perform in digital environment as well.

Step 4: Purchase and transaction to your wallet

Once you have found an object that you want to buy, you are ready to go. You can buy a piece of art directly, but often you are also allowed to make price suggestions. Similar to ebay and all other auction houses.

The purchase of the NFT is then settled in Ethereum. After the purchase, you have your ETF directly in your wallet.

Hold NFT: Coinbase Wallet Example

Your purchased NFTs are not “stored” or held in the marketplaces, but in your wallet. As mentioned before, there are many providers and apps, Coinbase is just one. MetaMask, WalletConnect, Bitski are other options.

Just like BitCoins or even Ehtereum, NFTs become part of your wallet and assets.

Conclusion: Buy and sell digital art

Digital art is not so different from real art. The market determines the price (supply and demand). The matter is still in its infancy, but in 10 or 20 years, we will be talking about Picasso, as well as … – we will find out in the future!
